Asics has officially announced the Gel-Nimbus 29, marking a significant update to its long-standing line of max-cushion trainers. Now in its 29th iteration, the shoe continues the brand's tradition of annual refinements to this legendary model, which has been a core part of their lineup for nearly three decades. The new version is currently available for preorder and will officially go on sale on December 1.
The most notable changes in the Gel-Nimbus 29 are found in the midsole construction. While it retains the combination of FlyteFoam and heel Gel technology seen in previous models, the specific compounds have evolved. The new shoe utilizes FlyteFoam Luxe Plus, a material described as even softer than the FlyteFoam Blast Plus used in the Gel-Nimbus 28. Additionally, Asics states that the updated Gel layer is 65 percent softer than its predecessor. To enhance stability and durability, the design features a wide sole shape for a planted feel and slightly increased outsole coverage for better grip.
Regarding weight, Asics has not released a full spec sheet but indicates the shoe weighs 9.8 ounces in men's sizing and 8.4 ounces in women's. This represents a slight increase compared to the Gel-Nimbus 28, which weighed 9.3 ounces for men and 8.1 ounces for women. Despite being marginally heavier, these figures remain competitive against rivals such as the New Balance 1080v15 at 9.2 ounces and the Brooks Glycerin 23 at 10.6 ounces.
The Gel-Nimbus 29 is positioned as an excellent choice for long runs where runners require a soft, supportive platform as mileage accumulates. The retail price remains consistent with the previous model at $170. As the new model approaches its release, the Gel-Nimbus 28 is currently available on sale for $130, representing a 23 percent discount. This predecessor can be found at retailers including REI, Amazon, Nordstrom, and the Asics website. Testers have previously praised the Nimbus 28 for its lightweight feel and soft-yet-supportive cushioning, describing it as a pleasure to run in despite lacking the updated midsole of the new version.
