A child in New York’s North Country has died after contracting measles, health officials announced Monday. It is the state’s first death from the disease in 30 years.

The child died in Lewis County, northeast of Syracuse, where authorities have reported 15 measles cases this year. Officials shared few details about the case.

Gov. Kathy Hochul said the death reflected weakening public health protections as more families forgo vaccinations. She also blamed Trump administration policies, saying they had undermined confidence in childhood immunizations.

“I am heartbroken to learn that a child in Lewis County has died after contracting measles,” Hochul said in a statement. She called the death a reminder of the consequences of eroding progress against preventable illnesses.
