WASHINGTON — The U.S. midterm elections could have broad consequences for American health care regardless of which party prevails, affecting policy priorities, political debate, and the operation of the federal health infrastructure.
A Democratic-controlled Congress could slow the policymaking process while increasing investigations and oversight. If Republicans retain their majority, the outcome could instead accelerate the party’s legislative agenda.
STAT reported that it interviewed more than two dozen government and private-sector leaders, consultants, lobbyists, and congressional staffers about the potential effects of the vote on the U.S. health system.
