STAT is seeking patients and practitioners with direct experience of mitochondrial replacement techniques, or MRT, as part of an investigation into the procedure’s use as a fertility treatment.

Over the past eight months, STAT has examined how MRT is marketed to older women despite limited evidence that it works. The procedure is also popularly known as “three-parent IVF.”

MRT is illegal in the United States, but a for-profit medical tourism industry connects women in the U.S. and Europe with clinics abroad where the procedure is accessible.

STAT is asking people familiar with MRT to provide information about their experiences, including how clinics offering the treatment operate.
