Democrats’ gains in the midterm elections could put parts of President Trump’s health care agenda at risk. The party regained control of both the Senate and the House on Tuesday, giving it a chance to block or potentially reverse some policies, according to STAT.
The results also dealt a potentially serious blow to Health Secretary Robert F. Kennedy Jr.’s Make America Healthy Again movement. Democrats flipped governorships in four states, adding to their ability to reshape health policy.
Over the past two years, the Trump administration’s health agenda included steep Medicaid cuts, an embrace of vaccine skepticism and disruptive reductions in staffing at federal health agencies. Democratic doctors were among the election’s winners, while Medicare for All returned to the policy debate, STAT reported.
The party’s ability to act remains constrained. Trump can veto legislation, and Democrats do not have the 60 Senate votes needed to overcome a filibuster.
