Nike has officially introduced the Apex, its latest elite marathon racing shoe designed to push the boundaries of performance footwear. While the general silhouette mirrors previous Alphafly models with an airy mesh upper and a thick foam midsole containing a carbon fiber plate, the Apex incorporates significant technological updates. The most notable innovation is the forefoot configuration, which features four Zoom Air units arranged in two stacked sets, doubling the count found in the Alphafly 4. This design works in tandem with the returning ZoomX LT foam and a tweaked carbon fiber plate engineered to guide the foot forward for maximum responsiveness.

A defining characteristic of the Apex is its zero-drop platform, measuring an even 40mm at both the heel and forefoot. This distinguishes it as the only super shoe on the market with a completely flat footbed, whereas competitors like Altra maintain a slight drop in their top-tier racers. Nike states that this balanced design allows for increased cushioning without exceeding the World Athletics 40mm stack height limit. Despite its advanced construction, the shoe remains exceptionally light, weighing just 5.9 ounces in a men's size 10.

Regarding durability and intended use, Nike emphasizes that the Apex is built specifically for race day rather than daily training. The brand notes in its official press release that the shoe is designed to serve runners for at least 100 kilometers, or approximately 62 miles, before showing signs of wear. Performance claims are equally ambitious; Nike reports that the Apex generates up to 40% more energy return than the Alphafly 3 and weighs 10% less in a men's size 10. These performance enhancements come with a premium price tag of $360 per pair.

Although the general public must wait until January 7, 2027, to purchase the Apex, professional athletes have already begun competing in the model. The shoe has already secured podium finishes, with both the third-place men's and women's finishers at the Chicago Marathon wearing the new racers. Meanwhile, Nike's current second-tier racing model, the Alphafly 4, is available for purchase starting October 29.
